Countless stories: Life at Air Transat
Monday, March 10, 2025
My shift started off pretty well, as always, with the bustling energy of Toronto Pearson Airport setting the stage. The counters opened promptly at 15:45, and we began with a briefing from our supervisors. That evening we only had two flights to manage, one to London Gatwick and the other to Faro, Portugal. We decided to assist with the flight bound for Faro.
Our first task was at the Kiosk, assisting passengers with check-in and printing bag tags. I assisted a few travelers, although many approached us with inquires about Air France and KLM. I had to explain that I couldn't help directly but gladly directed them to the KLM check-in counters. A memorable highlight for me was having my first-ever French conversation with a passenger. Though brief, as he was travelling with Air France, it felt like a big step forward in my language skills. Thank you Duolingo and Miss. Sandra's class.
The time flew by as Oma and I spotted Miss. Ava. It was so heartening to see her again. She was there conducting progress check for Cathay Pacific. We had a quick chat about our placement so far, and she offered us some kind words of encouragement before snapping a few photos. Her support really brightened our shift.
By 19:00, we were off to the gates. There, we had the privilege of assisting an unaccompanied minor. We made sure to treat him like a VIP, and the flight attendants gave him special attention. Seeing this reminded me of my own first experience travelling as an unaccompanied minor, it was such a nostalgic moment.
Oma had the chance to make the boarding announcement, which was exciting. I truly appreciate every opportunity to learn and grow during these shifts. We also met some past Seneca students at the gates, who were incredibly helpful and encouraging, a reminder of the supportive network we're a part of.
We helped transport luggage to the aircraft door, witnessed the "boarding complete" call, and watched the aircraft push back. It was such a satisfying moment. Afterward, we returned to the counters and assisted at the kiosk for the London Gatwick flight until the counters closed.
It was a fun and fulfilling shift, filled with opportunities to grow and connect. Each day in this placement is shaping me for what's ahead.
Shift hours: 1500-2300
